This paper gives a description of the modelling and control of a four quadrant line-side power converter. The converter is part of a traction motor drive supplied by the 25 kV, 50 Hz power overhead line. A model of the bridge in a moving reference frame of coordinates is used to develop a new type of control. The control system has separate controllers for the active and reactive current, permitting the free choice of the power factor. As the control system has no instantaneous current control, no extra fast hardware is required. A comparison is made between simulation results and measurements on a full scale test bench.
