Corporate organisations are undergoing transition to flexible and responsive networks embracing both customers and suppliers. But the desire for change is not always matched by an awareness of how to bring it about. The author draws upon the latest batch of an ongoing series of surveys of larger organisations. They highlight the need for clear vision and sustained top management commitment. Transformation is taking longer to achieve than was first thought. In a growing number of organisations, there is disillusion, and a gulf between expectation and achievement. In particular, many managers are not being equipped with the project management and other skills to bring about corporate transformation. The author identifies the skills that are sought and suggests that new attitudes and approaches are needed.
