'Run VT' voice control of broadcast systems

Speech recognition is moving out of the laboratory and into commercial use. In 1990 the BBC's Design Group began a study of existing speech recognition systems to assess their suitability for use in broadcasting. A demonstration system was developed using a commercial speech recogniser to provide real time control of broadcast systems, specifically a lighting system and a VT machine. The paper details the work undertaken to date and assesses the implications of speech technology in the context of broadcast operations.
