Summary form only. Detectors being planned for experiments at future collider accelerators and at X-ray synchrotron sources will achieve the required increased counting rate capability with a high degree of parallel readout, while maintaining a reasonable number of readout channels. Several forms of capacitive charge division in position-sensitive proportional detectors have been investigated. This class of encoders provides good position linearity and resolution, reduces the number of readout channels, and substantially reduces the capacitance between readout nodes. Cathode encoders using these new methods have two strips with specific shapes which lie between adjacent readout strips. They are considerably easier to fabricate than is the case with previous methods. Measurements have yielded differential nonlinearity of the position output of less than +or-5%, with position resolution limited primarily by phenomena in the detector gas.
