Implementation of adaptive transversal filter for digital data transmission in HF channel

In an HF radio system the signal is ordinarily received over two or more main ionospheric paths, with such differences in delay that a single transmitted pulse is received as two or more distinct pulses. For data transmission this gives rise to severe intersymbol interference (ISI). Theoretically speaking the ISI can be eliminated with equalization technique. However, the general adaptive transversal filter equalization technique employs a complicate hardware configuration and software algorithms, and it needs a long convergence time. It is very difficult to use these techniques in practical equipment. To cope with the problem, the author presents an adaptive transversal filter scheme with fast convergence and simple structure, which can be implemented with monolithic VLSI. This enables reliable high bit rate data transmission in an HF channel. The results of computer simulation are given.
