Electrostatic precipitation technology has played an important role in the control of particulate emission from fossil fuel combustion. During the last two decades, when increased specific efficiency was requested, several improvements were achieved in the design and operation of the equipment concerned; of particular importance are the improvements in efficiency, reliability and operation flexibility obtained by applying pulse voltage waveforms with newly developed electric power supplies. The author describes how recently, the possibility of also removing the gaseous noxious emission with pulse electrostatic technology has been verified. Although the results of the research are preliminary they have been achieved in an industrial context and have suggested the need for further investigation of the process on larger pilot-scale plants.
