A study model that analyzes the feasibility of applying a SONET self-healing ring (SHR) architecture in a survivable interoffice fiber network is discussed and used to study a metropolitan local access and transport area (LATA) network. Case study results using single and double homing interoffice networks suggest that the SHR architecture is attractive in terms of costs and survivability. The SHR architecture is shown to offer a cost-effective solution to applications requiring dual hub protection that cannot be implemented economically using present diverse protection methods. The case study also suggests that the SHR architecture will be more attractive if its hubbing counterparts have to use very-high-speed systems to implement networks.
