A token ring local area network (LAN) for campus wide communication based on the TI TMS380 adapter chipset

The commonest LAN is Ethernet, which uses a bus topology in which the network user stations connect to a common linear cable by network interface units. Common problems with this network are the bus contention problem and the need for expensive repeaters to boost signal strength. The concept of the token ring LAN is introduced to solve these problems. This project was divided into two parts. The first part is the design and development of the complete 68000-based computer system with timing calculations. The second part includes the interfacing of this computer system to a TI TMS380 LAN adapter chipset. These two phases are discussed. The authors present the design of the complete system and its installation in the University of New Orleans Computer Application Laboratory.
