A tritium gas delivery system (TGDS) for the TFTR (Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor) is required when the device commences deuterium-tritium operation. The system is comprised of the delivery manifold, gas-injection assemblies, and controls and instrumentation. It is designed to provide gas to the torus and neutral beams in quantities consistent with a rate of one shot per hour. Operation of the system for the valve calibration, glow discharge and pulse discharge cleaning (GDC and PDC), and high-power pulsing (HPP) modes of operation is accomplished with either preprogrammed user input or closed loop-feedback. The TGDS hardware (including the piezoelectric crystal injection valve which is used to control the flow of tritium into the reactor), the design philosophy, and the interaction of the system with TFTR operations are described.
