The charge-discharge characteristics of Li-Al/LiCl-KCl/LiCoO/sub 2/ and Li-Al/LiCl-KCl/LiFeO/sub 2/ cells are reported at current densities of 2 to 10 mA/cm/sup 2/ at 400 degrees C. The cycled cells exhibited multiple voltage plateaus in the charge and discharge curves, which were interpreted to be due to the formation of other lithiated transition metal oxides and/or higher transition metal oxides in addition to LiCoO/sub 2/ and LiFeO/sub 2/. It was also found that it was necessary to charge both cells to potentials of about 1.75 to 1.85 V to obtain maximum deliverable capacities. The polarization curves for both cells at current densities of 1 to 100 mA/cm/sup 2/ are also presented.
