The main features of a planned dual-band propagation experiment for the characterisation of high elevation angle land mobile satellite channel are discussed. It is believed that such an experiment is being performed for the first time. An alternative platform has been chosen in the absence of an appropriate satellite beacon. Transmission frequencies of 2.45 GHz and 10.68 GHz have been selected for the experiment. Transmitter and receiver hardware are being developed to appropriate design specifications. Helical and microstrip antennas are being used at 2.45 and 10.68 GHz respectively. The antennas have been designed and developed, and are undergoing radiation pattern measurements. Received signal levels along with the other useful data will be directly logged onto a PC storage disk using a data acquisition system. The analysis of the data is expected to produce models useful for system design of LMS service operating at elevation angles between 50 degrees and 90 degrees .
