A general discussion of the considerations and possible approaches for achieving high-performance interaction using objected-oriented data management for electronic design automation (EDA) tools is presented. The basic focus is on an integrated EDA system. It is assumed that performance is not simply the point performance of an individual tool on a design view but, more broadly, the performance of an integrated set of tools used to accomplish system design. It is suggested that the key to achieving maximum overall EDA system performance is the intelligent partitioning of the design tasks into suites, as opposed to the popular idea that all design tasks be 'integrated' with all other design tasks. It is concluded that once a tool aggregation is established, a logical data clustering mechanism supported by traditional physical data clustering would provide ample opportunity to optimize total system performance.
