Convertor plant has been seen for many years as a source of power system harmonic distortion mainly because they often consist of large power installations in chemical plants, steel works, mines, etc. and they are such that they cannot be ignored. However, the consequences of this attention over the years has been for such plant to be designed to minimise the level of the harmonics they produce. The author discusses how this is achieved for naturally commutated converters. The author then describes the different type of problem associated with frequency changing converters called interharmonics or noncharacteristic harmonics. The author discusses the UK Supply Authorities G5/3 recommendation for converter installations. The susceptibility to disturbance is also discussed.
