Gear generating cutting includes three generating elements: gear tooth profile, cutting tool edge profile and relative motion between machined gear and cutting tool. If we know the ay two elements, the third one can be derived according to the meshing theory. The basic idea of this paper is to take avangtage of flexible motion control of compute numerical control (CNC) hob machine so that the specific mdoification tooth profile can be generated by motion control with a standard hob. It will become possible and convenient to generatge an arbitrary complicated profile relying on the motion flexibility of CNC machine. When CNC system controls the relative motion between a hob and a workpiece derived from their profiles, the radial and tangential link modification displacement should be made to avoid the intervention.
