Oil Recovery from Bottom Beds of Kuwait Oil Lades by Retorting

During theGulf War in 1991, over six hundred oil wells were blazed in Kuwait. Oil gushed from these wells and resulted in the formation of more than 300 oil lakes covering an area of about 49 km~2. According to recent studies the amount of the heavily contaminated bottom beds of these oil lakes has been estimated as 40 to 50 million tons. Oil extraction from these beds is necessary to reduce their environmental nuisance. Various methods were proposed for this purpose, but to date none has been accepted for application on large scale. This study in vestigates the potential of retorting as one of the most promising methods.
