Trihalomethanes (THMs) are produced when certain organic materials are treated with chlorine. Ozone can't remove THMs once tyey are produced. Many researchers have studied the use of ozone for he oxidation of THM precurors prior to chlorination. In most cases, ozone can decrease the ptoential for organic materials to produce THMs upon subsequent chlorination. However, threre are some publications reprting the fact that THM formation is enhanced when ozonation is followed by chlorination. Thus, the effect of pre-ozonation on THM formation seems to change depending on the chemical composition of the raw water as well as the conditions of ozone treatment.
