Abstract: The Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support (MDIS) System isa four-year contract to install large-scale picturearchival and communications systems (PACS) andteleradiology in Army and Air Force medical treatmentfacilities. MDIS specifications were based on theresults of three years of tri-service research anddevelopment through the Digital Imaging Network SystemsProject and the Tactical Air Command TeleradiologyProject. At the time of the government's request forproposals, MDIS functional specifications representedthe most comprehensive understanding of therequirements for large-scale PACS and teleradiologycomplied by a composite team of radiologists, physicists, clinical engineers, hospitaladministrators, technologists, and computer systemsengineers. As MDIS sites become operational, a betterunderstanding of the capabilities and limitations ofteleradiology is emerging. This paper reviews functionsand subsystems common to all teleradiology systems,MDIS specifications for teleradiology, installationplanning, and the status of Army and Air ForceTeleradiology with special emphasis on earlyinstallations that validate routine teleradiologyoperations. !11
