Thermal shock resistances of carbon-containing refractories were evaluated by a direct electrical heating (DEH) method. This method, which has relatively larger heat flux than the other thermal shock testing, is applicable to electro-conductive materials. In this study, the DEH method was improved by using the thermal stress analysis and thermal shock parameters of infrared radiation heating (IRH) method. Occurrence and the propagation of fracture were detected using acoustic emission and used in the analysis of determination of critical thermal stress.rnIt was found that the thermal shock parameters obtained can be used to evaluate the thermal shock resistance of carbon-containing refractories. Several specimens, however, did not fracture due to insufficient heat flux depending upon the electric resistance of the materials. The thermal shock strength and thermal shock fracture toughness tended to increase with the carbon contents of the refractory specimens.
