Porous structural materials are useful for a variety of applications like filtration units, bio-based applications, clothing, fuel cell components, sensors, etc. In this paper we introduce a novel technique to manufacture porous structural ceramics and porous polymers using different biological agents [fungi and bacteria] and different materials [nano sized ceramic powders and polymers]. The shape and size of the pores produced and the morphology of the materials characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of the porous structural material are also discussed. The focus of this paper is to compare and contrast the fabrication of porous ceramic materials with those of porous polymeric materials using both single celled fungi and bacteria.
