A special purpose cold work tool steel, of commercial name SLEIPNER (0.9% C, 0.9% Si, 0.5% Mn, 7.8% Cr, 2.5% Mo, 0.5% V) is subjected to liquid nitrocarburizing to enhance its wear behaviour. SLEIPNER is mostly used for cold work tooling due to its high wear and chipping resistance. The tribological properties are evaluated using the standard pin-on-disk wear testing method with tungsten carbide based pin against steel at surface treated and annealed conditions. The variation of friction coefficient and wear volume were recorded as a function of applied normal load and sliding distance for a constant running speed. Optical microscopy is also used to study the microstructure and the wear tracks of the tested materials.
