Two approaches to approximately determine the orthotropic stress concentration factorrnfor symmetric and balanced laminates using only two parameters were investigated. The firstrnapproach was to plot the orthotropic stress concentration factor as a function E_x/E_y and E_x/G_(xy)rnand then use a curve fit procedure to develop an approximate relationship. A secondrnapproximation was found by combining the parameters E_x/E_y and E_x/G_(xy) to form a solution forrnv_(xy). Ten composite materials were investigated to determine the accuracy of the approximationrnfor a variety of material systems. The results showed that a good approximation to thernorthotropic stress concentration factor can be obtained by using only the parameters E_x/E_y andrnE_x/G_(xy), regardless of the material system.
