Profiles of oxidized functionalities in cellulosics (carbonyls and carboxyls in the μmol / g range) in relation to the molecular weight distribution (MWD) are obtained by a combination of group-selective fluorescence labeling and multi-detector gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Oxidative damage of cellulosic materials as well as oxidative changes by processing, chemical or physical treatments can be monitored with high accuracy much more comprehensively than hitherto possible.
