In order to quantify and characterize the loads imparted to bridge piers during barge collision events, nonlinear finite element impact simulation has been employed to simulate a variety of different vessel impact conditions. Descriptions of the methods used to model a hopper barge, bridge piers, and soil-structure interaction are given. Impact simulation results, including impact loads and barge deformations, are presented and compared to data generated using currently accepted bridge design specifications.
