Braided reinforcements are an alternative reinforcement architecture that many processors do not consider when developin g a new composite product. In fact, braided reinforcements are perhaps the most misunderstood and under-rated reinforcement architecture available to our industry. Misconceptions about braid abound, yet braided reinforcements are very efficient in delivering unique and optimum properites in composite laminates. This paper will explore the misconceptions that exist about braid. It will address the type of properties that are possible using braided reinforcements. The versatility of the braiding process demonstrates how flexible this form of architecture can be in meeting mechanical properites in all composite processes. The paper will conclude by identifying braided reinforcements as a cost-effective alternative to traditional reinforcements.
