High performance vinyl ester molding compound has been developed. It is based on newly developed high performance vinyl ester resin system. Typical two types of vinyl esters, bisphenol A type and phenol novolac type have different properites. Bisphenol A type vinyl ester tend to be tough, but performance at high temperature is inferior than novolac type. On the other hand, novolac type vinyl ester shows good performance at high temperature, but it tend to be brittle. Novolac vinyl ester resin is preferred to be used for high temperature applications. But it is difficult to be molded in some cases, because its crosslinking density is too high. The new specially modified vinyl ester resin shows both excellent performance at high temperature like phenol novolac type vinyl ester and good moldability like bisphenol A type vinyl ester. This vinyl ester resin is also modified with carboxylic anhydride to be maturatee with typical metal oxide or hydroxide like MgO, Mg(OH)_2. Its price is comparable to bis phenol A type vinyl ester. Impregnation, maturation and moldability of this high performance vinyl ester SMC, BMC and TMC is similar to unsaturated polyester molding compound. The molding compound show excellent mechanical properites at high temperature, toughness and creep properites. They are suitable for high performance automotive, corrosion and construction applications. In addition, the resin is colorless clear liquid although almost all vinyl ester resin is yellow or brown liquid. It means this system can be used for applications that is necessary to be pigmented.
