This paper describes the concept of OpenrnSystems Architecture (OSA) applied to Navyrnships and the benefits that accrue. OpenrnSystems Architecture involves the developmentrnof reference models and associated standardrninterfaces that can be supported by commercialrnindustry. These interfaces open the ship to thernlatest commercial equipment and technologiesrnand can provide upgradeability, flexibility, andrninteroperability throughout the life of the ship.rnWhile OSA benefits are well established forrnelectronic and computer systems throughoutrncommercial industry and the Navy, the use ofrnOSA for the total ship, including structural,rnelectrical, mechanical and other shipboardrnsystem interfaces represents a new and unprovenrnapplication. An Industry/Navy IntegratedrnProcess Team (IPT) for Total Ship OpenrnSystems Architecture (TOSA) was formed at thernNaval Surface Warfare Center, CarderockrnDivision, to develop total ship open systems.rnThe TOSA approach facilitates the exploitationrnof commercial and cooperative research andrndevelopment (R&D) efforts throughout a ship’srnlife by developing a framework of Open SystemrnArchitecture and standard interfaces. Byrnpublishing the framework, future R&D canrnconsider the available space and services thatrnmay constrain a specific function in the designrnof new elements.rnOpen system architecture is particularlyrnimportant for CBM applications since CBMrnimplementation involves the collection, analysisrnand transfer of large amounts of data with a widernvariety of sources and users. An effective CBMrnprogram is going to interface with the machineryrncontrol system and the various logistics supportrnsystems. The CBM system of then future willrnalso include a wide variety of user interfaces.
