Mail piece data capture and exchange systems

The ever-increasing usage of computers in the mail generation process has lead to both posts and the mail originators demanding greater flexibility, more control and better information from the equipment used to physically produce mail. The facilities added to satisfying the mail originator's needs may also be used to collect, collate and report details of the mailing process to the mail carrier.rnThis paper will highlight the purposes, capabilities, values and implications associated with several types of mail piece Data Capture solutions. This paper will base some of the findings on the series of postal pilot projects conducted by Pitney Bowes, Posts and Mailers over the past ten years (1) (2). Figure 1 summarizes the diverse data flows associated with the above solutions.
