This paper discusses a new sand-face completion designrnsuitable for stacked/multi-zone completions. Although therntechnique targets multi-zone applications, it is applicable torncased hole, a mix of cased and openhole, or openholernhorizontal single-zone well scenarios. This design providesrnsignificant flexibility and optimizes tubular dimensions usedrnto reduce the mechanical skin typically induced by completionrncomponents. The system is suitable for multi-zonerncompletions that incorporate traditional mechanical zonal-selectivityrnmechanisms or integration of intelligent zonal-selectivityrncompletion equipment.rnGiven adequate planning, the well may also be convertedrnat a later date to or from intelligent well configurationsrnwithout disturbing the actual sand-face completion.rnIn deepwater fields with heavy oil, the flexibility of thisrndesign and its potential for reducing the negative effects ofrnmechanical skin on life of field production provides a positiverneconomical impact. To date, one completion has beenrnperformed using the new configuration. From the success ofrnthat completion, others have been planned.
