The increased availability of global communication infrastructuresnallows providers and users of various application services to cooperatenin nearly unlimited geographic scopes. Problems of heterogeneity andnscale have motivated specific standardisation activities fornclient/server “trading” or service “mediation”ncomponents. Motivated by current limitations of the emerging ODP (OpennDistributed Processing) trader, this paper argues for a broader conceptnof general service “mediation” as more appropriate fornrealistic open distributed environments. The proposed mediation conceptnaddresses some of the heterogeneity and flexibility requirements of opennservice co-operation by a uniform “Service Interface DescriptionnLanguage” (SIDL). The goal is to support distributed applicationndevelopment for a “Common Open Service Market” (COSM) bynfacilitating flexible service selection and client/server interaction.nThe paper also presents basic components of a generalised trading andnmediation architecture as well as the status of a prototypenimplementation
