In amine plants, tris-hydroxyethylethylenediamine (THEED) is a common diethanolamine (DEA) degradation product that influences corrosion and reduces the effectiveness of DEA. THEED is formed by the presence of CO_2 at high temperatures, often a result of inadequate regeneration of CO_2 and excessive heat flux. THEED leads to an increase in corrosion within DEA and MDEA/DEA formulated amine units. A multiple plant case study will be reviewed where high concentrations of THEED were measured during periodic testing, and process issues were encountered. Potential process solutions will be discussed.
