A comprehensive and systematic study on the behavior of rockfill including superhard rock was carried out based on the high CFRD of Sanbanxi hydropower station. The rolling parameters of rockfill from various borrow areas and the use of soft or highly weathered rocks as fill materials were first evaluated through the large-scale field rolling experiments. Then the design parameters for compacting dam materials including superhard rock the rolling requirements of high CFRD with height over 200m were presented. The results of the study indicate that it is feasible for superhard rock to be used in dam in view of techniquc and economy which may be used in the design and construction of similar CFRD projects.
