A combined general approach to the development of corrosion inhibitors for industrialrnapplications based on electrochemical measurements along with both standard and acceleratedrncorrosion tests has been developed.rnElectrochemical measurements (corrosion potential, cyclic voltammetry and polarizationrnresistance) are used to assess both relevant physical properties and the relative corrosionrnprotection efficiencies of new inhibitor formulations. Additionally, electrochemicalrntechniques provide quick and reliable information on relative inhibitor performance profilesrnunder a wide variety of experimental conditions such as different water qualities.rnIn combination with standard engineering corrosion tests based on weight loss evaluation,rnelectrochemical methods are a fast and reliable option to both accelerate the development ofrnnew corrosion inhibitor systems and to optimise product formulations for differentrnapplications.rnThis development concept is exemplarily described for new inhibitor systems for coolingrnwater circuits and other industrial systems.
