The development of new process which can contribute to a decrease of the corrosion rate ofrnmetallic artefacts is one of the objectives of research in conservation. In this work, thernefficiency of linear carbon carboxylates of sodium of general formula CH3(CH2)n-2COONarnwith n=7, 9 and 10 noted NaCn for iron protection was investigated both by stationaryrnelectrochemical measurements and climatic chamber tests. It was showed that the addition ofrnsodium carboxylate solutions to the ASTM corrosive medium leads to an important decreasernof the corrosion current. The efficiency of these compounds is dependent of the immersionrntime. The best inhibiting behaviour is observed with NaC10 solutions. Climatic chamber testsrnrealised on steel samples confirm the inhibition effect.rnIn addition, the application of this new corrosion inhibitor family was evaluated on artefactsrnlike miner's lamps. The inhibition treatment doesn't induce visual aspect modification. Itrnappears that sodium carboxylate treatments are an interesting protection method for ironrncollections which could be proposed to curators responsible of metallic elements of therncultural heritage.
