E-GEM - EUROPEAN GNSS-R ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING

Earth Monitoring with GNSS signals is a promisingrnnovel area for Earth Observations systems. Thernincreasing number of sources, together with the lowrnlevel of requirements (power, size, budget, etc.) andrnpossibility of using COTS hardware, makes thesernsystems potentially very attractive for future spacernmissions, making this a very attractive complementaryrntechnology to traditional active radar systems. Since thernuse of reflected GNSS signals was proposed in 1993,rnthe number of research activities and scientificrnpublications has been steadily increasing, especially inrnrecent years, where the attention devoted to GNSS-Rrnhas increased exponentially after NASA has approvedrnthe first operational use of GNSS-R from space, therneight-satellite CYGNSS constellation.rnThe European GNSS-R Earth Monitoring project (EGEM,rnwww.e-gem.eu), started in 2014, is an FP7rnfunded project which joins many of the Europeanrnexperts in the field of GNSS-R and involves ten of therntop European institutions in this field. The goal of thisrnproject is quite ambitions, covering both instrumentsrnand scientific algorithms developments of for a numberrnof applications.
