Structure and properties of Si particulate reinforced aluminium matrix composites

To obtain a homogeneous distribution of fine Si particles in aluminum matrix, thus improving the adaptability of Al-Si alloy for aerospace and automobile application, Si particulate reinforced aluminium matrix composites have been processed by using P/M method. 20-40 #mu# m size Si particulates and Al alloy powders were mixed, degassed and extruded at 350 deg C for pure Al matrix composites and at 400 deg C for 6060 matrix composites. Microstructural characteristics of composites such as interfacial stability at high temperature have been investigated using variety of experimental techniques. Wear properties of the composites have been investigated by using a pin-on-disk type wear tester. The results have been discussed in terms of the observed microstructural characteristics and physical properties such as tensile properties and thermal expansion coefficients.
