35 Years of Contributions to Cast Shop Research and Development – Honoring Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schneider

Casting processes of aluminum and especially DC castingrnprocesses exist since less than one century. Although this area hasrna short history the findings in science of casting and the relatedrnsolidification process of aluminum are key assets for therndevelopment of the Al industry and its related fast growth.rnIn his now 35 years lasting industrially based research work Prof.rnWolfgang Schneider always focused on the link between soundrntheoretical understanding and industrial application of scientificrnfindings. This led to various significant contributions to ourrnindustry, which is also documented by a number of patents hernholds. His development activities span from filtration processes,rngrain refinement and modification to shape and DC castingrnprocesses itself. He published more than 150 papers and receivedrnnumerous awards for his work such as Light Metals Award inrn1990 and 1995 or the Madhu Nilmani Award in 2001.rnBesides his research he was Professor for Metallurgy at thernTechnical University of Berlin and gave lectures at RWTH inrnAachen. He was also active in related professional networks suchrnas Verein Deutscher Gießereifachleute VDG, Germany, DeutschernGesellschaft für Materialkunde DGM, Germany, and ThernMinerals, Metals and Materials Society TMS, U.S.A, where hernwas the first European President in 2012.
