Landscape evaluation as an integrant part of the Rehabilitation Process in Urban Landscapes

In this paper attention is focused on the role that public's aesthetic opinion might have as an auxiliary tool to professionals in the phases of landscape survey and analysis in rehabilitation processes. In the present study some landscape aesthetic variables seem to have a minor weight in people's preferences; this may put in evidence the citizens' difficulties in comprehending concepts such as landform,' sense of place', symbolism, or unity. This also applies to formal landscape variables like line and form. An understanding of what local community value and reject in their surrounding landscape seems important in rehabilitation landscape processes. In the present study respondents rejected the lack of care, the sense of dereliction, the absence of plants and valued the presence of water, the views, colours and light of the surrounding landscape. In conclusion, the methodology proposed for urban rehabilitation projects may be used as a tool to improve the landscape expert ideas and knowledge of the intervention site. An active participation of citizens, local community in particular is recommended in urban landscape reclamation.
