OCCUPATIONAL NOISE EXPOSURES IN UNDERGROUND LONGWALL COAL MINES

A review of current noise exposure data suggests that many coal miners will be affected by the proposedchange in noise regulations. The results of this time-resolved dosimeter study indicate that the additionaldosage resulting from exposure to sound levels between 80 and 90 dBA can be significant for longwallminers. It is concluded that a hearing conservation program will be required for all longwall coal mineface workers. In general, this study confirms the results reported at Noise-Con ’94 [1] for longwalloccupations, with Δ doses ranging from 7 to 32%.
