Engineering problems involving prediction of sound transmission through panels are frequentlyfound in several applications. In most cases, for structural and acoustical reasons, thin elasticpanels are stiffened with a ribbed frame and trimmed with layers of porous materials to achievea required performance. Complex structures such as aircraft fuselage and vehicle body panelsare good examples. For these cases the best methodology to predict high frequency behavior isStatistical Energy Analysis - SEA. In this paper it is shown how SEA parameters can beevaluated in terms of representing a ribbed-stiffened panel and a trimmed panel. In order toobtain a good prediction, modal density and coupling loss factors have to be correctlymodified. Insertion coefficients are defined and used to represent noise control treatment effect.Experimental data on sound transmission loss are used to validate theoretical predictions. Theresults show that SEA modeling provides a good prediction of the vibro-acoustic performanceof complex structures.
