Noise mapping and action planning in Ireland under Directive 2002/49/EC

European Directive 2002/49/EC requires the 27 Member States to manage environmental noisewithin cities, and for major transportation infrastructure. The Directive sets out a three stageprocess of strategic noise mapping, public dissemination and action planning. It is estimated thatapproximately 115 million people in around 160 cities across Europe were involved. TheEnvironmental Protection Agency was designated the national competent authority responsiblefor overseeing the activities under the national Regulations. This paper describes how theDirective was transposed to national Regulations, sets out the responsibilities assigned to variouspublic and private bodies, and describes how the EPA provided advice and published guidancefor noise mapping and action planning.
