Acoustics of Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Theater - Comparison of Acoustic Measurements and Simulation Results

Ancient theaters with landscape, location, good visual properties and good sound characteristics have been theinspiration in the design of many open air theaters. Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater in İstanbul, built in 1948 issuch an example. In this paper acoustical features of Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater are measured and simulated.We found that objective acoustical parameters of Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater are within the typical rangesgiven in ISO 3382-1[1]. We also compare our results with measurements and simulations of Aspendos and Jerash,which were part of the ERATO (Identification, Evaluation and Revival of the Acoustical Heritage of AncientTheaters and Odea) Project and we found that Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater have the similar acousticalcharacteristic of these ancient theaters [2]. Our simulations for the most part were in agreement with ourmeasurements, showing that the ODEON ver.8.0 could be used in the design of new open-air theaters or for themodification of existing ones.
