Acoustically and Flow Induced Vibration in Process Piping Systems - An Overview from the Engineering Contractor’s Perspective

Gas and hydrocarbon process plants have a history of piping system fatigue failures caused byacoustically induced vibration (AIV) and flow induced vibration (FIV). AIV and FIV are vibrationphenomena that must be considered to ensure that the piping system mechanical design is adequatefor the vibration energy generated.This paper discusses the causes of and theory behind AIV and FIV. Screening and analysis methodstogether with piping design options will also be discussed from the engineering contractorsperspective. Special emphasis will be given to balancing AIV and FIV analysis in the context ofcritical project schedule drivers that influence process flow information development and pipingbulk material procurement.
