Evaluation of Floor Impact Noise in Multi-story Residential Buildings

Floor impact noise has been evaluated by investigating the temporal/spectral characteristics of thenoise. Ten reinforced concrete floors with different sound-absorbing treatments were constructedand sound insulation measured to frequencies required by standards. The noises generated bydifferent impactors (the standard ISO tapping machine, a JIS tire impactor and a rubber ball as anew heavyweight impact source) were analyzed to find out whether there is any correlation withthe factors of ACF/IACF (Autocorrelation Function/Inter-aural Cross-correlation Function) andZwicker’s psychoacoustical parameters. Auditory experiments were also undertaken by 30listeners to compare with the physical and psychoacoustical parameters of the floor impact noises.As a result, φ (0) and IACC extracted from ACF/IACF, and Loudness and Unbiased Annoyancefrom Zwicker parameters showed high a correlation with subjective evaluation of floor impactnoise. It was also found that adding insulation to the underfloor wall structure is an efficient way toincrease the impact isolation performance.
