摘要

The effect of noise and associated conditions on the ability of children to learn effectivelyin typical learning environments is now a subject of increasing concern.Although detrimental effects of noise in learning situations is not limited to childrenexperiencing disability, it is very likely that those with a disability that affects theirprocessing of speech and verbal communication could be extremely vulnerable. Apreliminary study in New Zealand has found that classroom noise presents a majorconcern for teachers and pupils alike. Modern teaching practices, construction and meansof ventilation all contribute to the number of children unable to comprehend the teacher’svoice. It is particularly serious for the hearing impaired.A pilot study examined noise exposure for children and staff at eight all-day centres andfive sessional centres. Noise levels were the highest when distressed children werescreaming and involved in rough and tumble play. Lower levels were recorded in “mattimes” and when children were resting or sleeping. Some staff were subjected toexcessive noise levels which contravened noise levels permitted in the work place.Comprehensive policies, standards and guidelines are now needed to manage noise inearly childhood centres.
