COMPARISON OF COMMUNITY RESPONSES TO ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE AMONG RESIDENTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOUSING

Community responses were compared on the basis of dose-response relationships and causalmodeling by path analysis. The main results are summarized as follows: 1) People living indetached or row houses are more annoyed by the same level of traffic noise than those living inapartments; 2) the profiles of annoyance described by the path model were similar, although theeffect of disturbance to rest/relaxation in the garden or on the balcony on traffic noise annoyanceis stronger for people living in row or detached houses, due to the lifestyle in western Sweden;and 3) people are annoyed by exhaust fumes from road traffic to the same degree as they areannoyed by noise.It is concluded that non-acoustical factors, particularly exhaust fumes from road traffic anddifferent lifestyles of people living in different types of housing, are important for the evaluationof annoyance from road traffic noise.
