A National Noise Policy for the U.S.A. The Involvement of Non-Governmental Organizations in Noise Issues

There are a large number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the United States thatare involved with noise issues. These NGOs could play an important role both in thedevelopment of a National Noise Policy and in its successful implementation. NGOs, may beloosely classified in several manners, i.e. professional societies, standards organizations,consumer groups, quasi-governmental groups, etc. This panel session will have members fromseveral representatives of NGO’s who will discuss their activities related to noise. The panelmembers will also discuss the need for a National Noise Policy and the potential roles that NGOscan serve in this policy. Questions that will be addressed include: “What contribution can theNGO expect to make to the solution to America’s noise problem?” The panel will also discussNGO involvement during the enactment of the Noise Control Act of 1972 and its implementationwith emphasis on applicability to today’s environment.
