Simulating the Basic Overtaking Process of a Highway with the Deflection Curve of a Fixed-end-beam

The overtaking process between two vehicles on a highway is the most basic overtaking process. The traditional models for this kind of problem are not simple enough or do not have a continuous acceleration. To make it simpler, it is proposed that the deflection curve of a fixed-end-beam be used to express the speed-time relationship of the faster vehicle. In this way a mesh-less model is obtained. Comparing it with the traditional methods, useful conclusions have been drawn. The model has been compared with data collected in a real case, and the calculated model results match the observed results well.
