Torsion testing has greate technological importance as plastic flow is very stable in this deformation mode, so large strains can be readily reached. It is ideal to study the strain hardening characteristics of materials (stages III, IV and V) and to model industrial thermomechanical forming operations, such as rolling (1). The crystallographic texture shows continuous evolution in torsion (2-4). so it is particularly suitable for testing large strain crystal plasticity models. The present paper addresses boththe macroscopic behaviour (mechanics) and some aspects of the physical processes. The following topics are examined: i. texture formation in cold deformation, ii, axial effect (Swift and Inverse Swift), iii. the role of dynamic recrystallisation in texture formation.
