Durability of wood from plantation grown species was studied for developing value-added products from plantation resources. The natural durability of 3 Acacia species planted in Vietnam was evaluated by an accelerated decay test and a fungal cellar test. The mass losses of heartwood caused by a white-rot fungus; Trametes versicolor, and a brown-rot fungus; Tyromyces palustris in the accelerated decay test were 0 to 3% and 12 to 14% in Acacia mangium, 1 to 3% and 2 to 6% in A. auriculiformis, 4 to 5% and 3 to 6% in hybrid Acacia respectively. The damage grade of heartwood after the fungal cellar test for 18 months were 2.9 to 3.8 in Acacia mangium,, 0.2 to 0.8 in A. auriculiformis, and 1.5 to 1.6 in hybrid Acacia. Natural durability of heartwood was generally the highest in A. auriculiformis followed by hybrid Acacia and Acacia mangium. Heartwood of A. auriculiformis and hybrid Acacia has a potential as materials for exterior wood products requiring natural durability.
