Environmental awareness among scientists and chemical manufacturers has risen along with the development of science and technology. Alternatives for harmful and environmentally hazardous materials are explored to replace the existing ones to ensure that products abide health and safety regulations. Renewable resources from agriculture provide the best alternative to synthetic ones due to its superior properties and biodegradability. In this experiment, chitosan was chemically modified to form chitosan containing amine polyol. The products were characterized using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA/DTGA), infrared (FTIR) and elemental analysis (CHNS). The results proved that chitosan can be chemically modified with γ-butyrolactone to form a new material which have almost the same physical properties and might have different hydrophobic properties compared to the starting material.
